+ How can I pay my bill?

  • Automatic Debit: Set up automatic payment by calling 231-943-8088.
  • Online: Use your American Waste Account.
  • Phone: Call 231-943-8088 to pay by credit card, debit card, or check-by-phone.
  • US Mail: Send to American Waste, PO Box 1030, Kalkaska MI 49646
  • In Person: Drop off at one of these Office Locations.

+ When will online bill pay be taken out of my account?

If you pay by Automatic Credit Card/Bank Account Debit, your card will be charged on the 10th of the month following your invoice date.

+ When is my bill due?

You are billed for your trash on a quarterly basis. Invoices are due on the 15th of the month.

+ What should I do if I can't pay my bill?

If you are unable to pay your bill on time, call 231-258-9030 to let us know. We will work with you to avoid service interruption.



+ What items does American Waste recycle?

+ How should I prepare my recyclables?

Recyclables should be clean, dry and placed loose in your recycling bin. Give items a quick rinse and remove all food. Lids and labels can be left on your recyclables. Flatten cardboard. Do not bag your recyclables, or place one recyclable container inside another.

+ What should I do with items American Waste does not accept for recycling, like batteries and paint?

Visit the RecycleSmart website and the Take It Back directory to find out how you can reuse, recycle, compost or properly dispose of just about anything in Grand Traverse County. In other counties, contact your local resource recovery center for more information.

+ What happens if I put recyclables into my trash tote or bags?

Everything in trash totes and bags goes to the landfill. American Waste does not sort trash to remove recyclables, so please, put all recyclable materials into your recycling bin and not in the trash.


Waste Disposal

+ What time will my trash be picked up?

Place items at the curb by 6 am on pickup day in order to guarantee pick up. Many factors impact pick up time, including weather, staffing and equipment, so we cannot guarantee a pickup time.

+ What can I put in my trash tote, budget bag or roll-off container?

+ What happens if my trash is not out when the truck comes?

Please call 231-943-8088 as soon as you realize the trash was not taken out, and we will advise you of available options. Most often, you will wait till the following week's pickup and put out two weeks of accumulated trash. If doing so will result in extra bags beyond your service allotment, our Customer Service Representatives can mark your account and arrange to forego additional charges.

+ What is the proper placement for trash and recyclables at the curb?

+ How can I dispose of large items, like a couch or television?

Read about Extra or Bulky Item Pickup, then call 231-943-8088 or fill out our online form to make arrangements. You may also bring items to one of our Disposal Centers for a less expensive disposal solution. Our Disposal Centers are open to the public every business day. + How do I set up seasonal service and how does it work?

Call 231-943-8088 or fill out our online form to arrange for seasonal service. Tote delivery and removal is free when you sign up for three months or more of seasonal service. If you need less than three months of tote service, tote delivery and removal are $25 each, for a total of $50 paid up front. Budget Bag Service can be set up seasonally for any length of time with no up front fees.

+ Can I suspend my service if I will be out of town for an extended vacation?

Yes, if you will be gone for three weeks or more, call 231-943-8088 or fill out our online form with your last pick up day.

+ I'm working on a project that is producing a lot of extra waste. Can I rent a large waste container?

Containers are available in different sizes to meet the needs of remodeling and cleanup projects of all sizes. Pricing varies depending on container size, your location and the number of days you need the container. Find out more here.
