At American Waste, we are always looking for new ways to make our services better. Technological innovation is one of our best tools for successfully managing Northern Michigan’s complex and diverse waste stream.

First in Michigan

In July 2019, American Waste received a $474,000 Recycling Market Development Grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE, formerly MDEQ) to support our $1.4 million installation of Michigan’s first optical scanning equipment for fiber. This public-private partnership will result in technology upgrades at our Traverse City recycling center that will allow us to supply Michigan manufacturers of recycled products like cellulose insulation with the high-quality, uncontaminated recycled materials they need.

All American Waste trucks are equipped with GPS-enabled eMobile tablets that link our drivers with our call center in real time. As drivers follow their routes, they can see notes entered by the call center: Pick Up Additional Trash. New Customer. At each stop, drivers enter time-stamped notes: Picked Up. Trash Not Out. Access to Trash Blocked. Drivers can even upload photos of extra waste and bulky items left at the curb to assist the billing office. eMobile puts paperless routing and live dispatching to work for our customers and employees.

We invested in the American Waste app for iPhone or Android to give our customers convenient, 24-7 access to waste and recycling information. The app puts pickup and holiday schedules at your fingertips, offers phone notifications for pickup days, answers Frequently Asked Questions, and links to Live Chat and online Bill Pay.
